PayLink Pricing Guidelines
Knowing how rates affect your business is important to your bottom line. We want your business to accept payments with confidence - while avoiding unnecessary fines or compliance issues. Below is a breakdown of the most common pricing models, along with the rules you should know before selecting the right fit for your business.
Key Guidelines to Keep in Mind
- Never add a separate “processing fee” line item on a receipt. This is considered a non-compliant surcharge and could result in fines.
- Use approved methods only. Programs like Surcharge, Dual Pricing, or Cash Discounts are allowed, but each has specific rules you must follow.
- Stay compliant with state and card-brand rules. Visa, Mastercard, and other networks have strict requirements — and some states prohibit or cap fees.
- When in doubt, ask. Our team will help you choose a program and make sure your signage, receipts, and disclosures meet all legal requirements.
Pricing Models Explained
Surcharge Program
- Applied only to credit cards
- Cannot exceed 3% or the true cost of acceptance (whichever is lower)
- Must appear in the total transaction amount, on the receipt, and with proper signage
- Requires 30 days’ notice to your processor before activation
- Must be disclosed in Field 28, on receipt and POS & POE signage
- Not permitted in certain states:
- Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, New York
- Colorado allows surcharging but caps it at 2%
Dual Pricing (Cash Discounting)
- Prices must already reflect the difference at the menu, shelf, or register
- Proper signage is required — in some states (CT, ME, MA, OK, NY) it must be posted at the door and on the menu/shelf price
- Cannot apply dual pricing to card not present transactions.
- Discounting for cash, or ACH is permitted
- No additional fee may be charged above the amount listed on the menu/shelf, nor may you apply a fee at the point of sale and on the card receipt.
